Sustainability - Sheep on Heathland

Sustainability

At Kelling Heath, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We are dedicated to preserving the environment through various eco-friendly initiatives, including using renewable energy, reducing waste, and enhancing biodiversity.

By making responsible choices, we strive to create a positive impact on the environment while providing a memorable experience for our guests.

Did you know? Our small flock of Welsh Mountain Sheep help protect our lowland heath.

Without our flock, the heathers and grasses of the lowland heathland can be taken over by more aggressive vegetation, eventually turning it into a scrub woodland.

How can you help?

We are committed to preserving our stunning natural surroundings. To help keep this area beautiful for generations to come, we encourage our Guests to embrace sustainable practices during their stay, and beyond. Read our Environmental Charter here.

Support local businesses.

  • Choose locally-made crafts, gifts, and food items to support artisans and reduce the impact of transporting goods over long distances. Our Village Store offers a range of local products.
  • Dine on Park, or at local restaurants and cafes that use Norfolk-sourced ingredients.

  • Turn off lights and sockets when not in use.
  • Keep your heating to a comfortable temperature. If it’s chilly, put some layers on instead of turning up the heat.
  • Close windows and doors when heating to maintain energy efficiency.
  • Reduce use of single-use plastics by bringing reusable bags, water bottles, and coffee cups. Refill water bottles on Park.
  • Our Village Store no longer sells water in plastic bottles.
  • Use the recycling bins provided throughout the Park. Be mindful to separate general waste, dry mixed recycling, food and glass. We are committed to reducing the waste we send to landfill and increasing our recycling target. More details can be found on our website.

Leave the car behind! We are lucky to have a vast array of walking and cycling trails both on Park and in the local area.

You can hire a bike from Huff & Puff Cycles located on Park!

Did you know, we have 6 Electric Vehicle charging points located near the main car park?

Water is a precious resource, and we can all play a part in using it responsibly:

  • Take shorter showers and turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.
  • Use the half-flush option on toilets.
  • Report any leaks or dripping taps to the Team.
  • Stick to marked trails and paths to avoid disturbing wildlife and plant life. Avoid feeding wildlife as this helps keep animals healthy & wild.
  • Leave wildflowers and other natural features as you find them; do not pick flowers or remove rocks and branches.
  • Leave nothing but footprints.

Please keep dogs on leads and under control at all times

This Summer, we began our “Don’t take a break from Recycling” campaign to encourage waste sorting while on holiday.
So far in 2025, we reduced our total waste output by an impressive 46.97 tonnes compared to the previous year. Reflecting our continued commitment to responsible waste management and environmental stewardship.
Practical changes such as switching from pizza boxes to plates, introducing Coca Cola on tap behind the bar to reduce glass waste, and replacing plastic bottled water with a more sustainable equivalent in the shop have contributed significantly to this success.
These efforts underscore our ongoing dedication to sustainability and demonstrate the positive impact of thoughtful procurement and waste conscious decision making.

A highlight of this progress is the successful diversion of 3.69 tonnes of food waste from general waste streams, ensuring it was properly extracted and processed. While recycling rates have remained broadly consistent year on year, the overall reduction in waste generation marks a meaningful step forward.
