Family Nature Ramble & Wildlife at Dusk

Wildlife at Dusk

Family Friendly Pre Booking Required

Nature watching on Kelling Heath doesn’t just end during daylight hours. In the summer months we are incredibly lucky to be one of the few breeding sites for the elusive Nightjar in the UK. A bird seldom seen due to its dusk habits and a least 9 species of bat have been recorded by Carl (out of the UK’s total of 18 species) on the Park.

About the Activity Provider

Carl has a lifelong passion for nature and has worked for various wildlife and conservation charities and has recently appeared on both BBC and ITV news programmes. He is currently a Countryside Ranger responsible for a large slice of the North Norfolk coast and England’s largest Grey Seal Pupping colony.

Carl was many years ago approached to see if he could do an evening walk for Kelling Heath, He thought it was a one off and is still leading walks more than 12 years later!

Always keen to share his knowledge of the environment, Carl welcomes questions during the walks on all aspects of the Natural World.

With Family Nature Rambles we look at seasonal wildlife found in the many and varied habitats of the Park. The key word here is family and Carl’s aim is to appeal to all ages and levels of wildlife/plant life knowledge. Both walks are designed to include the whole family.

Wildlife at Dusk

Nature watching on Kelling Heath doesn’t just end during daylight hours. In the summer months, spot Nightjars, which although can now be found at many UK sites, Kelling Heath’s population size of up to 9 pairs makes here a particularly good place to see the elusive Nightjar in the UK. A bird seldom seen due to its dusk habits and a least 9 species of bat have been recorded by Carl (out of the UK’s total of 18 species) on the park.

What will you learn on your activity?

Carl’s aim for all the walks is to enhance people’s knowledge of the UK’s incredible and diverse wildlife. Topics covered include such topics as the bizarre life cycle of the dragonfly, the amazing different types of tree that grow on the park and how our special Silver Studded Blue butterfly, part of a UK wildlife re-introduction success story, is protected by an army of ants!

During Dusk walks Carl will dispel a lot of myths surrounding our night-time species. Find out how bats are doing us a valuable service and why Nightjars choose to fly from Africa to Kelling every Summer.
