As well as a network of footpaths for you to explore, there are self-guided routes nearby, too.

These are available throughout the year and can be enjoyed at your leisure at any time of day.

Nature Trail

This trail takes you through heathland and woodland, then passes a pond. Heaths and woods are beautiful places, and those around Kelling are further enhanced by views of the sea and nearby coast – the whole space is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

History Trail

Kelling Heath is steeped in history. All around are clues about how the landscape has been shaped in natural ways and by humankind. Along this route are several stops with things to see and do. For instance, you will find out about the wildlife here at Kelling Heath and the special relationships between humans, plants, animals and their environment. The trail is less than 2 ½ miles (4km); it should take about 1 1/2 hours, starting and finishing in the Village Square.

Anniversary Trail

2009 saw the 25th Anniversary of the ownership of Kelling Heath by the Timewell Family. During this time, significant resources and dedication have been invested to enhance the visitor experience and help protect and preserve this unique natural environment for future generations.

Opened in mid-May 2009 to celebrate the anniversary, this circular trail explores some of the natural and built environments at Kelling Heath and explains what impact our interventions have had over the past 25 years. Guests can walk the 2-mile route following the pink way markers and directions from this self-guided leaflet and the interpretation along the trail which should take about two hours to complete.

Tree Trail

Launched in 2010, the new tree trail explores 25 species of trees on a circular route around Kelling Heath aided by a self-guide leaflet. The trail is part of the 25-year celebrations at Kelling Heath and sees a tree for every year of ownership by the Timewell family. A mix of existing and newly planted trees make up the trail.

Easy Access Trail

This easy-access trail starts just beyond the village square at the sculpture and is identified by its red waymarker. This delightful circular route covers ¾ km of level, natural ground which includes an area of rare lowland habitat. This area is home to rare species, such as the Silver-Studded Blue Butterfly, successfully re-introduced onto the heath following a joint venture with the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Butterfly Conservation and Natural England in 2004.

Kelling Heath seeks to preserve and maintain this precious environment by considerate management of scrub removal and the grazing of animals in order for it not to return to woodland.

The trail continues past a solid viewing point with magnificent views of the Weybourne coastline overlooking our resident flock of Welsh Mountain sheep who are representative of traditional heathland grazing.

Trim Trail

A woodland eco-gym for adults.

You will find the Trim Trail through the double wooden gates leading off from the main drive.

Follow the grey waymarkers around the trail as it takes you through broad-leaved and conifer woodlands and finishes at our conservation pond.

Along the route, you will find the following apparatus to test your strength; Parallel Bars, Hurdles, Step Ups, Balance Beam, Pull up bars, Rope Climb, Leap Frog, Russian Rings, Hurdles, Dual Ab Bench, Wobbly Balance Beam, Back Curl, Log Run.

Orienteering

The Orienteering trail takes you to the four corners of the Park. You can collect a map from Reception to help you find control posts. These are identifiable by the red and white squares at the top of each post. Each control post has a number and a code letter – copy these into the appropriate boxes on the map.

The four suggested courses are:

  1. Short, easy (children & beginners) – 1.14km – flat Start – 1 – 4 – 5 – 6 – Finish
  2. Medium difficulty – 2.7km – fairly flat Start – 2 – 3 – 5 – 9 – 11 – 16 – 17 – 18 – Finish
  3. Rather hard – 3.9km – approx 65m climb Start – 2 – 6 – 9 – 11 – 14 – 15 – 16 – 19 – 21 – 23 – Finish

The Orienteering trail can be enjoyed by all ages but children must be accompanied by an adult.

Kelling Heath iPhone Explorer App

The Kelling Heath iPhone Explorer App is suitable for all ages.

Explore a choice of two new specifically designed trails:

  • App Trail 1: Enchanted Wild Wood (please allow 45 minutes to walk trails).
  • App Trail 2: The Golden Trail (on the level and can be enjoyed by cyclists and walkers).

Both Trails start outside Brackens in the Village Square.

The waymark symbol for the app trail is indicated by an ‘i ‘ – look out for the signposts along the route. Find the trail checkpoints, unlock the questions and earn a Kelling Heath explorer badge.

These two Kelling Heath Explorer iPhone Apps can be enjoyed by all ages but we recommend that children are accompanied by an adult. Read the news story here.

Mountain Bike Trail

We have a self-guided mountain bike trail in the park. It starts at the Village Square and follows the cycle symbols on wooden posts. We recommend that you wear cycle helmets whenever cycling.

The Poppy Line

The North Norfolk Railway has a steam railway line between Sheringham and Holt, part of which borders the park. On the north edge of the park is the Kelling Heath Halt, a platform where you can board the trains. Please note, the steam train cannot stop when the train is going to Holt because the incline is too steep for the train to get moving again!

It’s a great experience to have a ride on the restored steam trains, and timetables are available on the North Norfolk Railway website. A booklet containing several walks of varying lengths, starting at Kelling Heath and incorporating a ride on the Poppy Line into part of the journey, is available from Reception.
